Dierkes Lake

6.11.2013

Summer is in full swing!  We have officially begun our weekly trips to Dierkes Lake.  What could be better than water, friends, food, and sunshine on a warm summer day?

My boys and me!  I need more photos like these.
My suicidal child.  Just kidding.  This photo makes me bust up laughing.
It also grosses me out thinking of all the stuff Levi puts his mouth on.  Thank goodness for good little immune systems.
Levi and Rhett.  These two are already buds.
Dani and her sweet little brood.
Levi had sooo much fun on this swing.
I sure do love these goofy smiley boys of mine!

I'm looking forward to many more days just like this one all summer long.

Top 3 Weekend Picks

6.09.2013

#1. Flowers from the yard sweetly picked by Jed just for me.  Melt my mommy heart!

#2. Getting away for a few hours Saturday afternoon to go mountain bike riding with my sweetheart!  I may have had to hike a bike a few times, but I'm proud to say I conquered that mountain.  We love a physical challenge and spending some quiet(er) time together.

#3. Barbecue with friends at our house!  Nothing beats relaxing with food and friends.  We all sat in the shade of the front porch outside to eat and chat.  Levi looked like a little chipmunk with his cheeks full of watermelon.  It made him angry that he couldn't chew!  Funny kid.

 Bonus:
Pick #4. Dipping our feet in some cool water on our Sunday afternoon walk

An Afternoon in the South Hills

6.07.2013

Can I tell you how much I enjoy being the mother of two little boys, especially Jed and Levi's mother?  Not only are they cute, yes, but this age allows for flexibility and spontaneity I'll never experience ever again.  We don't have any obligations to school and sports.  Not yet.  Our days are open and carefree.  And this summer, I am going to love every minute of that freedom.

Yesterday was a warm and gorgeous day.  I was itching to get outside to do something fun.  That's when I spontaneously decided to pack a lunch, retrieve the baby backpack from the attic, and head into the South Hills for the afternoon.

The boys and I wound our way up through the rocky canyon until we came to Ross Falls.  Jed was excited to "climb."  I strapped Levi to my back and we began the easy half mile hike to a small waterfall, stopping along the way to admire bugs and flowers.

Jed needed me to hold his hand on the steep parts.  So tender!
The little falls and Jed running on the trail
The boys stuck their feet in the cold water
Jed had a rock in his shoe... and dirt on his face

After our short hike, we headed back down the canyon to a shaded picnic area.  Jed chose to sit in the tall grass instead of at the tables.  I think he made a great choice!  We spread out our blanket under the shade of a tall tree and chowed down on lunch.

My feeble attempt at a self portrait with my boys.  I was there too!
Levi "attacking" Jed.  These boys love to wrestle.
Throwing/Eating rocks

During lunch, Jed pointed and exclaimed that he saw a mommy deer and a baby deer.  I didn't spy them, but the enthusiasm with which Jed told his dad all about them at dinner I think he really did see some deer!

After lunch we wandered down to a rocky "sand" bar alongside a slow moving stream.  The icy cold water felt refreshing on our toes!  The boys threw rocks (Levi got several mouthfuls of the gritty stuff) and inevitably got soaking wet.  Boys will be boys and I don't expect anything less.  It's a good thing I always pack an extra outfit for each of them in my bag.

By then it was time to call it an afternoon.  These memories I'm making with Jed and Levi are so precious to me.  I absolutely love days like these.

Throwback Thursday

 Lauren, Joe, Jessie
circa 2006

One of my all time favorite photos ever.  It's not a great photo; it's about the memory.  My brother, sister, and I were enjoying a beautiful summer day in San Diego Bay with my dad on his boat.  If I remember correctly, the weekend included lots of laughter, a competitive game of RISK, and pretty much bordered on perfect.  Lauren, was that the trip the Coast Guard boarded the boat after spotting us sitting on the bow in our bikinis?  Good times.

Though hundreds and sometimes thousands of miles separate us, we Wades try to get together once a year.  Right now August can't come fast enough!  I'm going to squeeze you all till your eyes pop out!

Snapshots of Life Lately

6.05.2013

I think it's high time for another installment of recent snapshots!  The only thing is, I don't have a very wide variety.  Lately I've been leaving my camera behind more and more for two reasons: 1. It takes away from the moment and 2. We've been doing a variation of the same things over and over again.  So if I forget to comment about what we've been up to lately, please assume that everything is a-okay.  We're just going about our daily lives around here.  We conquer chores, nap in the afternoon, make meals, run errands, and spend as much time outside as possible.  We've become big park fans.  And bike fans.  We like bike rides.  It's a quiet simple life, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Levi emptying my kitchen drawers.  For some reason, I love this stage.
Jed riding his new strider bike!

 ^^Eating chalk^^
Jed and I drew a picture of two sailboats and labeled their Captains: Captain Jed and Captain Dad
Then Jed begged me to trace his entire body six times before moving on to tracing just our feet

These next pictures are from Saturday evening.  Our friends bought a triple slip 'n slide and invited us over to try it out!
Whoosh!  Jed getting an extra shove from Dad down the runway
I even took a turn!  Woohoo!!!
The kids were feeling a little chilled until the men hooked the hose up to the warm water!  Levi suddenly turned into a crazy fish.
Looove this view of Jed's rear end.  It makes me smile every time.
He's getting really good at voluntarily watering trees.

 In other news...

::  Bron and I started Insanity. You know, that crazy dvd exercise routine.  Bron has resolved to lose some weight and prepare for his Spud Man race and a half marathon.  I'm determined to lose my post-baby tummy pooch.  Tell me, is that even possible after a second baby?  Wish us luck!

:: I have to brag: Jed if officially potty trained!  Hip, Hip, Hooray!  Only a mother would be excited about human waste in a toilet and I am officially one of them.  Jed has been accident free for two weeks.  I am talking dry after naps and DRY THROUGH THE NIGHT!  I honestly thought that staying dry through the night would take years to accomplish, but it just clicked for Jed.  Don't ask me what my secret is, there isn't any.  It's simply a miracle.  That, and twenty second cold showers.  After trying every incentive I could think of when Jed suddenly became stubborn and lazy about using the potty, we started rinsing him clean in a quick cold shower.  I'm a mean mean mom, but it worked.

::  Jed is my mini me.  When we spent the afternoon at the park last week, Jed and I prepped ourselves to race down two purple slides. “1..2..3..Go!” I exclaimed. And then to my left I heard an echo, “Wheee!”  I laughed to myself realizing that I say wheee every single time I slide with Jed. It’s only natural for him to say that too! Then I thought: Wait, doesn’t my mom say that? Oh my gosh, I am totally my mother!

And I thought my children would only inherit my physical traits.  Ha!

Ten Fingers, Ten Toes, Ten Months

6.03.2013

My Happy Baby Boy,

Where has the year gone?  You are no longer my tiny baby, but a big baby!  It leaves me with a lump in the back of my throat knowing that your babyhood is slipping away.  The first year is so precious.  But I must admit, even last summer I was looking forward to this summer: the summer when I'd have a three year old and a baby on the cusp of turning one because big babies are so much more fun than little babies!  I dreamed of the days I could lather you in sunscreen and take you swimming in the pool or careening down the slides at the park.  And I'm happy to announce that those days have arrived!

Not only are we spending hours outside in the sunshine, but these days your little personality is beginning to emerge.  You smile, you giggle, you cry when I walk out of sight.  You are as tough as nails, as indicated by how your brother sometimes treats you.  (In Jed's defense though, you have a bad habit of pulling hair.)  You still like nursing, but not when there is the mildest distraction in the room.  These days you're also crawling and pulling yourself to a stand like an old pro.  You've become my little ankle biter, following me around the kitchen as I put dinner together.  But I don't mind; I honestly love the crawling stage.  You seem so much more content now that you're able to move and explore the world at will.

I am soaking up these warm days with you on my hip and your brother at my side.  It's going to be a blissful summer.

I love you, Baby Boy.

Love, Mom

P.S.  I hope you're feeling better today!  I don't mind skipping church to cuddle you at home all day, but I'd rather have a healthy baby.
