A Birth Story for Ezra

5.29.2020

He's here!  Introducing the softest and squishiest bundle of joy who completes our family.

Meet Ezra Glen Nelson born on Friday May 22, 2020 at 4:29 PM weighing 9lbs 1oz and 21.5 inches long.

Ezra is my tiniest baby with by far the smoothest and quickest delivery.  It's true when they say no two deliveries are alike.  I now have four completely different, and yet uniquely beautiful, birth stories to tell and to relive over and over again in my mind and heart.

So let's back this story up to Thursday when I had my doctor appointment.  I was 38 weeks + 6 days pregnant and dilated to a "loose one centimeter" with plans for a 39 week induction because I grow my babies so large.  Doctor Cannon did a quick membrane sweep (WOWSERS! That was a bit painful.) in hope of "stirring the pot" to get things moving before the big delivery day on Friday.

Well, I didn't go into labor, but it worked!  Thursday afternoon I stayed as busy as possible, going on a walk with the boys and cleaning the house.  When Bron and I arrived at the hospital bright and early Friday morning at 6AM, I was already dilated to a "stretchy four".  Woot!  My body was already doing its thing.

Welcome to the World!

A Birth Story for Conrad

11.25.2016

Written in a notebook in the hospital and over the next few days...

He's here!  And I am still in thankful disbelief that he's real.  This perfect little body with a wide nose, big eyes, and soft cheeks is now a part of our family forever.  He's a cuddly ball of endearing reflexes and tiny intuitive instincts that make me 'ooh' and 'aww'.  I can't wait to get to know him!  So far he seems pretty chill and I am already hopelessly head-over-heels in love with him.  Conrad was worth the wait.  He is worth every sad and frustrated tear over the past three years or so, a testament that God is good and mindful of me.  I can't help silently thanking my Heavenly Father over and over again for this precious gift.  The depth of sweet joy I feel for this baby is indescribable.  I am so, so happy.

Conrad Joseph Nelson was born 8 days before his due date on Friday November 11th at exactly 3:30PM.  He weighed 9lbs 5oz and was 22 inches long.

Perhaps part of my disbelief that he's here and real is that going into labor was absolutely the last thing I expected to happen that day.  Friday was Veterans' Day and both Jed and Levi didn't have school.  My plan for the day was to prepare for my induction Monday morning by cleaning and picking up the house (the house was trashed!) followed by the boys playing with friends. We were also completely out of essentials like milk and eggs, but a shopping trip could wait til Saturday.  Or so I thought... Ha!

Welcome, Baby Boy!

Welcome, Baby Boy!

8.04.2012

I know.  Yes, we grow 'em big and precious around here.

Levi and I are roommates in the hospital until tomorrow. We have nothing on the agenda other than to be healthy for the doctors and to snuggle and stare at each other. It’s unfortunate that pregnancy lasts a grueling nine plus months and my precious baby will only be a newborn for about one month because I could seriously become addicted to newborns. I want to put time on pause and soak in everything about this baby boy. I miss him when the nurses take him away to do routine tests. Levi is so precious! He is perfect in every way—from his wide fat cheeks down to his long crazy toes. I feel as if my heart has swelled to capacity. Heaven is having Levi lie on my chest while I kiss the top of his soft head and breathe in that sweet newborn smell. I am so blessed to be a mother.

Levi Wade Nelson was born on Friday August 3, 2012 at 1:58PM in Twin Falls, Idaho. He weighed in at 9lbs. 9oz. and was 22 inches long.

Levi’s birth story began on Thursday when I went to visit the doctor for my 39 week appointment. The office did an ultrasound to estimate the baby’s size. It looked as if my second baby boy would be around 9lbs 1oz, give or take a full pound. So when the doctor announced that my cervix was at a three, he asked if I’d like to have my baby tomorrow. With those blessed words, Doctor Astin immediately became my new favorite person. Yes sir, I would love to have my baby tomorrow! Please put me out of this misery called late pregnancy with all of its aches and pains. The best part was that Bron couldn’t wipe the smile off his face either.

It was so nice to have the entire afternoon to prepare. Momma Nelson was even able to drive out that evening to take care of Jed for us. Bron and I felt so many emotions, ranging from nervousness to pure excitement.

Friday morning, Bron and I arrived at the hospital with bags in hand around 7:45AM. The nurses checked me in and hooked me up to the monitors. I tested positive for Strep B this pregnancy, so I would need two doses of antibiotics before I delivered. The worst part of the morning was having the IV placed in my hand with an 18 gauge needle. It took the nurse a while to find the right spot, (I couldn’t watch) but soon the water and antibiotics were dripping freely.

At around 9:30AM, the doctor came in and broke my bag of water. A half hour later, Bron and I were commanded to walk the halls in hopes of getting contractions started and labor moving along. It was so nice to have Bron at my side. I looked ridiculous in the hospital nightgown and white granny panties, but Bron held my hand and we talked as we slowly made our rounds. Soon the contractions started coming. Bron kept the time with his phone and let me lean into him as the contractions became stronger and more frequent.

By the time I crawled back into the delivery bed at 11:30AM and got hooked up again, the contractions were coming on long and strong about a minute or so apart. Labor was getting intense! I closed my eyes and tried to breathe through the waves of pain. Bron massaged my back; that’s where it hurt the most. Needless to say, I was ready for an epidural. Luckily, the anesthesiologist waltz into the room not a moment too soon and fifteen minutes after that I had a perfect epidural: I was pain free from the waist down but could still feel pressure.

At about 1:20PM, the nurse began to prep the room for delivery. When she pulled out the infant bed, I nearly cried. It suddenly became so real: a new person was about to arrive! Bron felt the same way. In just minutes, we were going to be parents to another little boy. It felt exciting and surreal! The nurse checked my cervix just before 1:50PM and declared that I was ready to push. The doctor and resident were called into the room. Everyone and everything was ready and in place. I don’t remember how many times I pushed. All I remember is the intense pressure and briefly wondering if I could do this again. I could feel the baby’s head. A few pushes later, I could feel that with just one more push I would feel relief. Bron cheered me on and I squeezed his hand.

Then suddenly Levi was here! He was light purple and wasn’t breathing. I immediately knew something wasn’t right when the doctor didn’t place him on my chest. Instead, Levi was whisked straight to the infant bed where the nurse began to work him over, trying to get him to cry. Oddly, I didn’t feel an ounce of panic. I knew Levi was going to be okay. Apparently, Levi had the cord wrapped loosely around his neck. The doctor was able to unwrap it during delivery, but Levi had also swallowed some fluid. Just a minute later, Levi let out a whimper and he began to turn a healthy shade of red. The nurse was trying to make him angry, but Levi simply didn’t care. By the time the doctor put three measly stitches into me, Levi was ready to snuggle and nurse.

Bron and I enjoyed a peaceful sublime hour, just the three of us in the room. We soaked in Levi’s newness and reveled in the thought that we had just created another life, another family member.  In those moments, we felt a little closer to heaven.  There is nothing on earth quite like a brand new life.

I’m surprised by how good I feel this second time around. Labor and delivery was so much shorter and smoother; I hardly tore. My body knew what it was doing. This time, I also know what to expect: what goes on in the hospital, what my body is doing to recover, what it means to be a new mom. I’ve done a version of all of this before and it’s much less stressful the second time around. I’m on cloud nine. I’ve never been happier.

The part I am nervous about? Adjusting to caring for two little boys at home. But I believe that in time, that too will become second nature.

I love you, Levi. Somehow, you make me feel more complete and you’ve only been here a day.

I'm a Mommy

5.01.2010

Mom and Jed (4 days old)

I am a mother; a mother to a perfect, precious, baby boy with big fat cheeks, long dark hair, and curious eyes. It still feels so amazingly surreal. My wedding day was the happiest day of my life, but the birth of my first child was an incredible experience that defies words.

Jedediah Flint Nelson was born four days past his due date on Sunday April 25, 2010 at 8:25PM. He weighed in at 9lbs 4.4oz and 22 inches long. I couldn’t have asked for a more smooth delivery.

Jed’s story:

I awoke early Sunday morning at about 2:00AM to some cramping. I soon realized that these cramps were pretty regular. I was in labor! I laid in bed too excited to sleep, counting the minutes. Finally, after hours of anticipation and pacing the duplex, Bron and I arrived at the hospital around noon where I was declared to be 4cm and 100% effaced. After some tests, Bron filled the jetted bathtub up for me. That’s where I found my groove to ride out the contractions for a few more hours. The jets on my back helped me relax enough to count through the contractions collectively. Bron thought I made it look easy, sipping at some water through a straw like it was lemonade. And actually, I surprised myself. I was all psyched up about the pain of labor, but found it very bearable in the warm tub. At about 5:00PM I was dilated to 7cm and the anesthesiologist administered the epidural because he was already there on the floor. The midwife then broke my water. The epidural made me a little nauseous, but it felt great! I totally recommend it. I didn’t realize how exhausted I’d really become and was able to take a long nap. At about 7:45PM, the midwife said I was ready to push.

It was just an intimate little group in the room: myself, Bron, a nurse, and the midwife. I can’t imagine pushing without an epidural; just the pressure alone was unspeakably and incredibly intense! I gritted my teeth, closed my eyes, and pushed with all I was worth. I felt his soft head of hair and couldn’t believe the moment was almost there. Pushing a baby out is an extraordinary feeling! I saw him and heard his first cries. Bron quickly cut the cord and the baby was placed on my stomach. Wow. The moment was surreal. I was looking at my baby! My baby! My senses and emotions were in shock. It was all too overwhelming to take in at once. I looked at Bron; he had tears in his eyes. The moment was just as significant to him too.

And yes, I couldn’t deliver a big baby like that without tearing—in two places. I saw the look on the midwife’s face. She was calm, but I could tell the bleeding was worse than she was letting on. The doctor was called in right away and I was stitched up immediately—without the epidural. I squeezed Bron’s hands while he whispered what a great job I did. The entire ordeal is something Bron and I will never forget.

Now I am a mother. Bron has been so sweet and helpful, pulling a “night shift” here and there so I can get some sleep and running errands. Between caring for me and a new baby, he also has to finish his tough semester at school while working too. I have an amazing husband. People have been so kind to bring food and offer to help out where they can. I’m grateful because this whole role of “mother” is a bit overwhelming.

I am a tidal wave of emotions. I now eat and breathe for this tiny human being whom is utterly dependent upon me. We were connected as one when I was pregnant, now we’re practically connected as one on the couch. We’re on a learning curve, Jed and me. I’m not a very fast diaper changer and I’ve never nursed before, but Jed is being a good sport and we’re figuring everything out together.

The realization that my life will never be the same has hit me. I’ve thought more than once, “what have I done?” And I can’t take it back. The responsibility for this little life is tremendous! I feel like I’ve lost something, but in reality, I’ve gained everything. Now that the two of us—Bron and I—have become three, I feel like I’ve forever lost that one-on-one relationship with my husband. It will never be just the two of us again. But the good news is, it will always be just the two of us; my relationship with my husband can go on forever. We can still go on dates and cuddle on the couch and he is still my best friend. We just also have a new relationship to establish with our son. The dust will settle in a few weeks and we will all adjust to being a family. I was scared to death to get married because I thought I’d lose something. But I didn’t. I’m happier than I’ve ever been. I have a feeling that becoming a family is going to be much the same.

I love my newborn boy. I love holding him on my chest and hearing his tiny kitten purrs as he sleeps. I love it when he grips my finger as he eats. I love his snorting sounds as he tries to latch on. I love looking at his wide eyes and kissing his tiny toes. I love his nose, his big fat cheeks, and turkey neck. I’ve lost some sleep over this tiny baby, but I can’t resent him. He is just too cute and way too precious. Time will fly much too fast. I want to enjoy every moment with this new baby, my baby, because it will only happen once.

I think I can say I am truly happy to be a mother. Exhausted, but blissfully happy.

He's Here

4.28.2010

Here is the awkwardly written post by the new father, Jessie will have a better post in the future, but I have what counts with the stats and PICTURES. Jedediah Flint Nelson made his arrival on Sunday at 8:25pm, coming in at 9 lbs 4 ounces and 22 inches long. He was born after 18hrs of labor, but only took 45mins of pushing to get him here—Jessie did amazing and was extremely determined (as many of you can probably imagine) to see her little boy. Both momma and baby are doing well and both came home last night (Tuesday) around 7:00pm. The first night was an adjustment to say the least, but we have high hopes that we may have figured a trick or two to help out.
