The Nelsons Climb Tiny Town

5.22.2017

On Friday evening, after Levi graduated from preschool, Bron met all of his brothers for a night of camping at Castle Rocks with their families.  I graciously bowed out.  May is way too early in the year for me to go camping with a baby who already has a snotty cold and isn't sleeping well anyway.  But the boys had a blast roasting hot dogs and getting to sleep in a tent with Dad!  They can't stop talking about it.

I met everyone up at Castle Rocks the next day for the best part: rock climbing!  Even Flint and Merri Sue joined us.  We must have looked like a gypsy community with our combined 19 children and gear.  Haha.  But there were plenty of snacks, three ropes, and everyone got to climb who wanted to.  We adults chatted while the kids played among the rocks with warnings not to step on any cactus!  I'm not sure how many bathroom hikes to the outhouse I took the kids on, but the day went a hundred times smoother than I anticipated.  We all had a ton of fun together!  Even Merri Sue tried a route.  I'm so glad she did.  This climbing hobby has become a family affair.

Delay of Game in the City

^^Brotherhood is soaking up the sun like a pair of lizards.^^

Though winter seems she does not want to relinquish her hold on the earth, we're so excited that the sun is ultimately winning the battle this Spring because warmer weather means rock climbing!  Saturday, we met Kaleb and Chantee in the City of Rocks for just such an adventure.  Talon and Amber and their crew of cousins joined us too.  We happened to find one of the tallest sport climbing routes in the park open!  Down inside the canyon, the wind was partially blocked and the sun's rays reflected off the rock wall warming us all up.  So we set up our day camp, taking turns climbing the wall and simply enjoying one another's company while the kids explored and climbed and ate all the snacks.

It was a successful trip to the city... except for the part where I accidentally sunburned Conrad's cheeks; it was so cold it didn't even occur to me to put sunscreen on him til afterwards!  And then Levi fell off a boulder and screamed in pain; he sprained his ankle and couldn't even walk to the truck.  Finally, Conrad threw up the entire contents of his stomach on to me.  I was soaked clear through my underwear.  In fact, that rancid milk got all over the front seat of the truck too. Bron still can't get it all entirely out of his fancy air conditioned leather seat.  Pee-yew!  The latter two things all happened around 6:00PM, so needless to say, I was ready to call it a day.  Life with kids.  You win some, you lose more.  Or at least it feels like that some days.  Haha.

Happy Birthday America!

7.09.2016

I think we convinced our boys that Independence Day is indeed one of the best holidays of the year.  There's something about seeing flags everywhere that makes one feel patriotic and proud.

We began our three day weekend with a barbecue and friends on Saturday night (after a full day of chores and errands, of course).  By unanimous vote, the kids' favorite part of the evening was lighting the few fireworks we bought.  I mistakenly bought a "pooping dog" that the kids haven't quit talking and giggling about since.  Boys!  Haha.  There were also some screamers and battling tanks, and best of all, sparklers!

We began July 4th early Monday morning at a church breakfast and flag ceremony--where I played my violin, the kids sang, and Levi fell on his face and scraped up his nose.  Poor kid.  However, it just felt right to pause for a minute, to reflect and show respect for the flag: the emblem of the land and country I love.

Following breakfast, we spent the afternoon rock climbing at Castle Rocks State Park with some friends.   The clouds rolled in and it wound up being a perfect afternoon.  And we had the whole park to ourselves!  We couldn't believe it.  We all took turns climbing a 5.9- route.  I'm always surprised at how easy something looks from down below, but when I actually get on the rock, it's much more difficult!  But you know I live for the challenge, even 20 weeks pregnant.  And apparently so does Levi!  He's pretty much addicted to rock climbing.  I think he climbed four times.

Then we polished the day off with pizza, glow sticks for the kids, and a fireworks show in Burley. We sat out on a golf course directly underneath the show. The fireworks were so close I could eat them!  I held Levi in my lap next to Bron and Jed.  We couldn't help screaming and laughing. It was exhilarating.  "This is the best day ever!" Levi squealed.   Yes, it's definitely one to remember.

Words don't adequately express how thankful I am for this beautiful country and the freedoms that we enjoy. I only hope I can pass some of that love and respect along to my boys.

Memorial Day Weekend (Baby's First Ascent!)

The big holiday weekend and kickoff to summer couldn't come soon enough for both Bron and me!  We had a long week here.  Bron had a work trip in Denver while I held down the fort by my pregnant self here at home.  Wednesday felt more like Friday for both of us but we still had two more work days to endure!  In fact, I don't remember what we actually did on Friday night.  I'm pretty sure we just crashed after putting the kids to bed.  However, the party began first thing Saturday morning and we played hard all weekend long!

Saturday morning I agreed to run "shuttle service" for both Bron and his friend Aaron.  They rode their mountain bikes down Third Fork.  The little boys and I hiked and explored around the bottom of the trail until they arrived back.  In fact, the trail was in such amazing condition, that the guys decided to run it TWICE!  I was dyyying of jealousy.  This whole growing a baby thing requires some sacrifice, you know.  Of all the things I miss most, getting on my bike for an adrenaline pumping ride is near the top of the list.  "Next year," I keep chanting to myself because safety trumps risking injury.  But the whole morning was a win-win for all of us after all, I think.  I truly enjoy getting out of the house and into the sunshine with my little boys!

Afterwards, I was the one who came home and napped for two hours!  Sounds a little backwards, right?  Totally.  Bron took the boys with him to the hardware store to buy a long-awaited weed whacker while I snoozed at home.  Thanks, Honey!  He's great.  I think I'll keep him.  :)

Then that night we enjoyed a barbecue with the Horsleys and roasted marshmallows over a fire in the backyard.  Annnd to top it all off, my friend Amy and I got to sneak to the store for some late night shopping.  Pretty perfect day, right?  Absolutely.  But that was just the beginning...

Fall Time Adventures in the City of Rocks

10.06.2015

^^Our Saturday evening view of Castle Rocks State Park just adjacent to the City of Rocks^^

The City of Rocks has become our playground!  We have spent every Saturday over the last month rock climbing the giant granite slabs there out in the desert.   Rock climbing is an addicting sport!  I know we'll never amount to anything competitive, but the challenge and adrenaline rush are what keep us going back.  That, and the chance to completely unplug from the world.  There is absolutely no cell service in the desert.  Instead, the kids run around, climb, explore, and play imaginative games while we adults get a chance to talk and laugh and challenge ourselves on the rocks.  It's kind of dreamy when I write it all out.

Bron and I feel so lucky to have some of the best of friends whom are willing to teach us the ropes--literally.  Thanks Horsleys!  Without them, we wouldn't be out there.  I am so happy for the opportunity I have to develop new talents and interests in my adulthood because honestly, it never occurred to me until recently that it is totally possible/plausible.  Plus, I love that these weekend adventures and sports are becoming commonplace for my children.  Jed and Levi look forward to them with great enthusiasm!  I can totally see the four of us loading up the truck one day with bikes and climbing gear and who knows what else to disappear for a few days.  Yup, that's my idea of a perfect weekend: wholesome recreational activities for the whole family and a lifetime of good memories.  Glad we're already getting a head start.

So without further ado, a gob of photos from the past month...

This giant granite mountain boulder is known as Bread Loaf.  We climbed it two weekends in a row and conquered three different routes.  The challenge was a bit humbling.  And I can't believe how incredibly HIGH we got up there!  Whoa.  But I suppose that is what is so liberating about using ropes and harnesses; I get to do something I normally wouldn't do with minimal risk to myself.  See that tiny smear of blue?  That's our friend Aaron.

^^Bron and I taking on the 5.9 route^^
^^Mini man chalking up his hands in preparation to climb!  Levi insisted.  It was so cute.^^
^^Our friend Shelly.  Also, Levi learning what it feels like to leeeaan back to repel.  "It's like flying!"  Haha.^^

Jed has a love/hate relationship with rock climbing.  It's a funny cycle.  Jed begins by getting super excited to climb.  At about eight feet high he freaks out.  We lower him to the ground safely, he calms down, but then he's ready to climb again!  Silly kid.

^^Levi and Easton showing off their 'hulk smash' muscles.^^
^^What do YOU look like after you eat an entire bag of M&M's?  This kid is sooo messy, but he makes me laugh.^^
^^Bron's first lead climb.  I'm so proud of him.  Don't let that rock fool you.  It looks like 'child's play' but we were smearing with our hands and feet all the way up!^^
^^Bron conquered!  Also, how incredible is that backdrop for play?^^
^^Bright orange and lime green moss?  I was blown away by how uniquely pretty the desert was!^^
^^ Insert theme from Mission Impossible!  Hahaha.^^
^^Aaron and Amy.  Amy is one tenacious gal.  It's so fun to watch her climb!^^

We went camping over the weekend.  Camping sure is a lot of work for a crappy night's sleep (it was freeeezing cold!) but the countless stars, roasted marshmallows, and fresh air adventures will no doubt keep me coming back.  Plus, the little boys enjoyed it a hundred times more than I did.  The looks on their happy little faces made it all worth it.

^^Bacon for breakfast.  Mmmm!  Pull my arm, I'll go camping again.^^
^^The kids ate a lesser meal of sugary cereal for breakfast.  They thought they were luckiest ducks!^^
^^Addy.  She's like my favorite little girl.  She lets me cuddle and spoil her.^^

I took the kids exploring around the campsite.  We spied a young buck and avoided stepping on some cacti.  Then Levi collected an armful of these sticky golden pine cones.  He insisted that we make them into bird feeders--you know, just as all the birds are flying south for the winter.  But who am I to disappoint a curly haired three year old?

Hope to see you again soon, City of Rocks!

Rock Climbing in the City of Rocks

9.14.2015

^^New favorite!  Totally blowing this image up and framing it.^^

I promise, our daily lives really are chuck full of the normal monotony that make up life.  My couch had a pile of laundry to the ceiling this week.  It took me two days, a bit of stress, and some help to get a load of {client} images off a corrupted SD card.  Whew!  And I'm trying to be mature about it (Am I 3 or am I 30?) but I still struggle waking up a sleeping child each morning to get ready for school.  There were two mornings last week when I helped Jed get dressed in under ten minutes and then loaded him into the car--breakfast in hand--with instructions to 'eat on the way'.  So yeah, all in all, I am still adjusting to this new school year's routine.

However, all that day-to-day tedium is easily overshadowed by weekend fun.  On Saturday we followed our good friends, the Horsleys, out to the City of Rocks for an afternoon of rock climbing!  Even the kids got in on the action.  We parked the 'Acadia Brigadia'--we both drive GMC Acadias,  haha--just off of a place called Practice Rock.  It slopes upward and is the perfect spot for teaching kids how to climb.

Levi was the first to get on that train.  He geared up and headed straight to the top of Practice Rock without ever looking back, though it was a little bit more difficult than he imagined.  But the brave kid did it.  The scary part was sitting back in the harness to come back down.  Fortunately, Aaron was there every step of the way.  And Jed climbed too!  He is much more cautious by nature and actually claims to be afraid of heights.  Jed got himself halfway up the rock and was ready to come down again.  Nonetheless, he was determined and tried it twice.  That's more than successful for a first time in my book!

Just adjacent to Practice Rock were a series of more difficult climbs that we adults (and Ollie too!) tried and I am proud to say, we conquered.  Woot!  Woot!  Having very little experience rock climbing, I had no idea what I was doing.  I approached the rock very differently than either Amy or Aaron, but the thing is, I did it!

Rock climbing is such an exhilarating sport: a heart-pounding, adrenaline pumping, strategy thinking, muscling through, kind of exercise.  I am hopelessly hooked.  It is time to start collecting our own gear because our whole family can't wait to go back!  A whopping THANK YOU to the Horsleys for inviting us along.  We feel so lucky to have friends whom enjoy adventuring in the outdoors just as much as we do!  Saturday was soooo much fun.

See for yourself in pictures!

^^My brave little boy near the top of Practice Rock^^
^^While we all took turns climbing, the kids entertained themselves with monster trucks in the dirt and grazed on snacks.  It worked out great.^^
^^Dirtier than the boys!  Addy is one little girl whom is easy to love on.^^
^^Go, Jed, Go!  I am so proud of that little man.^^
^^Oliver looking like a regular rock climbing pro.^^
^^Amy and Aaron showing us how it's done.^^
^^The little kids cheering on Bron while munching on snacks.^^
^^Chocolate pudding break^^
^^Our Saturday evening view.   Crazy how there's a pocket of granite boulders in the middle of the desert.^^
^^Then the boys had the time of their lives climbing and exploring.^^

I couldn't help laughing at this view every single time.  Jed ripped holes in his pants and all the way through his underwear by sliding down the rough rocks!  It reminded me of a similar incidence that happened to me in high school repelling with a church youth group, except Jed didn't seemed phased at all.  Embarassed?  No.  Ready to explore til he couldn't see his hand in front of his face?  Yes.  Good thing those pants were old.

^^I never want to forget just how animated Levi's facial expressions are these days!  Lol.  He was running to tell me about a bobcat he'd just seen.  Thankfully he really didn't see one.  He was just passing along the older boys' big imagination.^^
^^Tough Boys: Owyn, Jed, Ollie, and Levi^^
^^That's me!  Seriously, love this stuff.^^
^^Looking pretty awesome there, Amy!^^
