Jed's 12th Birthday

4.26.2022

Happy 12th Birthday to Jed!!!  I'll be honest; it does not feel like yesterday that he was born.  It was a whole other lifetime ago. The three of us -- Jed, his dad, and myself -- have grown and changed so much since that momentous day.  I am so proud of the young man Jed is becoming.  He is learning the value of responsibility and work. I have really enjoyed watching him pass the sacrament at church and be excited about attending his young men's activities.  He's discovering his own interests and talents -- like reading and mountain biking!  He's all limbs right now and is growing like a weed.  His hands and feet are as big as mine.  Soon he'll be taller than me!  We've graduated from little boyhood and are careening straight on into his teenage years.  What a hard and magical thing it is to parent a child.  I love Jed so very much!  Happy Birthday!  Thanks for letting me be your mother and be your biggest cheerleader for the ride of your life.

Happy 10th Birthday to Jed and a DIY Escape Room Quarantine Party

4.25.2020

Dear Jed,

Happy 10th Birthday to the boy who made me a mother and changed me for the better! Words cannot express how much joy you have brought into my life.  Some of my favorite memories of you begin with your little smiling face peeking over the crib rails at me and continue through today when you showed me your latest Lego invention.  I am so proud of you, Jed.  You have many God given talents and gifts.  I hope you come to recognize them as I have.  You are naturally caring and compassionate; it helps make you a great big brother.  You have a keen sense of justice and an inventive and creative mind.  I know that with some work and dedication, you can accomplish anything you put your mind to.  Best of all, you love to tease and laugh.

I cannot believe it has been 10 years since I first cradled you in awe.  I hope you know that I still look at you that way sometimes.  I love you, Jed.  I hope your quarantined birthday becomes a special memory with a cool story to tell.

Love always,

Mom

Celebrating Jed's 9th Birthday: Halfway to Adulthood!

4.15.2019

We celebrated Jed's 9th Birthday a few days early!  On Sunday we invited two family friends over for lunch and dessert after church.  The Horsleys and Sondereggers are both families who share similar opinions on how to raise boys.  Their boys are already good kids and I can only hope they will be the best of influences on my own boys as they play together around the neighborhood this summer.  After eating some lasagna, we adults chatted while the kids played outside... on a drizzly day.  Then it was time to open presents and devour Jed's favorite dessert: peanut butter brownies!  It was a loud and chaotic three hours, but completely worth it; Jed felt so loved.  These low-key parties are totally my jam.  A big thank you to our friends for making Jed's birthday feel so special!

Jed's Baptism Day

5.07.2018

Saturday was an extra special day for Jed!  It was the day he chose to be baptized and confirmed a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and to become a follower of Jesus Christ.  I was a proud beaming mama.  Jed couldn't have been more excited!

Jed was baptized at the stake center with all of his closest friends and family in attendance.  The room was full of fidgety little kids (all cousins and siblings of friends) and I couldn't help smiling; it's exactly the way it was meant to be.  I played my violin, everyone wrote some encouraging notes to Jed, and he was also given the gift of the Holy Ghost by his dad.  Simple, short, and sweet.

Then, by some miracle, we managed to feed all 52 people a proper Cinco de Mayo lunch at our home afterwards. It was chaos, but I wouldn't want it any other way. Looking around, I was overwhelmed by the amount of love and support I felt... all for my little boy, all for our family. We are so lucky.

Jed's 8 Year Old Photos and a Special Letter

4.25.2018

Dear Jed,

Today is your 8th birthday and I am a surprisingly hot mess about it all.  Where did all the time go?  I dreamed of this day and now here it is!

I remember holding you in my lap the day after you were born and thinking, "What did I do?  I just ruined my life!"  The weight of responsibility for this tiny baby just felt crushingly heavy.  Little did I know that April 25, 2010 actually marked the beginning of a joyous ride.  I have never felt more purpose or joy as I do in being a mother--your mother.

Jed, you have one of the biggest and most caring hearts on earth.  I know for a fact in my own heart that you are meant to be our oldest child.  You are naturally obedient and want to do what is right.  You are a sponge, soaking up all sorts of knowledge.  As we read the scriptures together, I often stop to ask you questions and you reply with surprising understanding.  You are meant to be the leader of our trio of boys, Jed.  I know the Lord has great trust in you, just as I do.

Jed, you have come so far this year!  Something clicked at school way back in September.  You suddenly matured emotionally.  No more fits; that just wastes time and gets you no where.  Instead, you learned to grind those gears and made huge leaps forward academically.  I am so proud of your work ethic at school.  It will come in handy one day.  You are so smart, Jed.  I know you can do anything you put your mind to.

Jed's 8th Birthday Party

4.22.2018

We have the best of friends who made time in their busy schedules to help us celebrate Jed's 8th birthday yesterday.  He opted for a party up in the South Hills, complete with bike riding, hot dogs, and s'mores roasted over hot coals.  A total success... mainly because my girlfriends knew where to pick up the slack and brought plenty of delicious side dishes.  The kids had a blast playing along the trails and climbing rocks and wielding giant sticks while we adults chatted.  It was the most relaxing birthday party I've ever hosted.

It occurred to me last night that we've been doing these get-togethers with the same set of family friends and their children for about five years now.  Wow!  It feels like something special.  These gatherings are definitely going to be a big part of Jed's childhood memories and mine.  So much love and support in this little community I get to call home.

Happy {almost} 8th Birthday, Jed!!!  We love you so much.

Jed's 7th Birthday Party

4.26.2017

A birthday party for my 7 year old!!!  Jed was soooo excited!  He invited ALL of our family friends to celebrate his special day with him.  And of course, true to form, it rained.  Jed wanted a Ninja party, but I've decided that Pinterest has officially ruined the birthday party.  Whatever happened to good old fashioned cake and ice cream, presents, and games?  So that's pretty much what we did, with the addition of a "ninja obstacle course" in the backyard because it's important to compromise.  But I think Jed won out in the cake department.  I could have eaten half of that Reese's Peanut Butter Poke Cake by myself!  I'm smacking my lips just thinking about it.  Yum!

When Jed opened presents, he was surprised to actually find a rock inside of a box!  Boy should know better by now; his dad loves to tease him.  Underneath the rock was a note that led him to a stick located in the back of the pickup truck with another note that told him to check our master bedroom.  There, Jed found his big present from us: a barrel of Lincoln Logs!  It was a fun little scavenger hunt to play with our new reader and a successful birthday party.  Someone was always available to entertain Conrad and I think I'm finally adjusting to the chaos of having a million children around for a few hours.

I love you, Jed!  I hope you had a great birthday and look forward to an even better year of fun and growth ahead.

How We Partied for Jed's 5th Birthday

4.27.2015

With all that's been going on personally and emotionally, I am grateful for the chance I got to put all my efforts and energy into celebrating the life of this awesome kid who made me a mother.  A worthy distraction indeed, and a reminder of just how blessed I truly am.

We began Jed's 5th birthday celebration a couple of days early.  On Thursday afternoon, Bron, Levi, and I loaded into the truck and picked Jed up from the bus stop.  We simply told Jed we were going into town for a special birthday surprise.  Boy, was he bursting with excited anticipation... until Levi told Jed that we hadn't packed Jed's bike into the truck with the rest.  Then Jed got all worried!  Little stinker.  Once we pulled into the bike shop however, it wasn't long before Jed was all happy smiles again.  He was getting a brand new bike for his birthday!!!

The boys settled on a black and blue 20" Trek.  It still makes me do a double-take to see my little boy on something so big, but he rides the bike with confidence.  Plus, he is much faster with those big wheels!  Needless to say, Jed is head-over-heels in love.

^^All smiles after his first test ride.^^
^^Anxiously watching as the store owner replaced the original tubes with slime to prevent flats.^^
^^Admiring the new purchase in the back of the truck.^^

Then we headed to the park for a family pizza picnic and bike ride.  Not five minutes after arrival, Jed was testing out his new wheels on the grass when he suddenly turned and went careening head first into the ditch with a foot of water.  Jed did his first endo!  I thought for sure we were going home, but Jed insisted on climbing back on his new bike.  Jed wasn't going to let a little 'ol crash get the best of him!  I helped Jed climb into a pair of too small but dry pants from the truck and he rode until his legs gave out.  He was so excited and determined!  That's my boy.  Bron and I had a ton of fun just watching him and trying to keep up.  What an awesome family night out!

^^Taking on the big grassy hill!^^

Saturday was Jed's big day: officially five years old!  His party started at 1PM and he could hardly stand the wait.  We invited three of our favorite family friends over for burgers, games, presents, and cake.  The day was overcast and a little rainy, but we partied hard anyway.  The kids were all so busy playing and we grown-ups were enjoying the conversation so much that no one left till dinnertime.  It was an absolute party success.

Jed insisted on having a "rocket cake".  I have no idea where the idea came from, but it's what he wanted, so it's what the birthday boy got.  (Thanks to Pinterest!  Haha.)  I've decided that I need to do one of two things: stick with frosting simple round and square cakes or take a cake decorating class.  Oh well.  Jed thought it was the bomb and that's all that really matters!

^^Eating lunch!^^
^^Game time!  We played the classic Pin the Tail on the Donkey.  Then each child received a candy necklace.  Total hit.  I love how easy little kids are to please!^^

Happy Five Years, Jed!  We love you so much and are proud of the smart, happy, silly, sensitive, and brave boy you've become.  We couldn't be happier to have you in our lives.
