Happy New Year! | 2023 Recap

12.31.2023

Well, a career pivot for Bron coupled with breast cancer, a mastectomy, and complications for me is most certainly the definition of a rocky start for any year!  But I am happy to announce that 2023 ended on a high note.  All is well that ends well.  This December we are all healthy and happy and thriving here in the Nelson home.

I feel so lucky to simply be a cancer statistic.  I saw God work miracles in my life this year.  It's a story of tears and pain and stress but it doesn't make it any less miraculous.  I am ending the year in a state of sincere gratitude for my blessings and heart-bursting love for the boys I get to claim as mine.  We fit so much life and adventure into one year!

The Highlights of 2023:

JANUARY

:: Bron began his new job as the general manager of Liberty Basin.

:: The whole family hopped on a plane to spend a fantastic week in Florida swimming, spying alligators on an airboat, and riding all the rollercoasters at Disneyworld and Universal Studios.

:: I celebrated my 38th birthday at the beach.

FEBRUARY

:: Levi enjoyed a fast paced pinewood derby competition with the boys at church. I attended a flower arranging class for Valentine’s Day.

:: Misty had the sweetest and fluffiest litter of Aussie Doodle puppies on the 18th.

:: I prepped for surgery with an appointment in Boise and an MRI in Twin Falls. Then I went in on February 24th for my seven hour Mastectomy and reconstruction surgery.

MARCH

AKA The month everyone wants to forget.

:: I spent three days in the hospital on IV antibiotics. I had surgery to remove my right breast implant. Three weeks later I had surgery to put another implant back in and woke up with a wound vacuum. Five days prior to that I had an in office procedure to clean up and re-suture my left breast incision due to necrosis.

:: At work, Bron dealt with train derailments and a flash fire and loads of stress.

:: The boys had spring break, but of course we went no where.

:: The little ray of light during the month was having my sister visit for a week after my last surgery. She took care of the kids and kept me laughing.

APRIL

:: We celebrated Easter and Jed’s 13th birthday. He’s officially a teenager!

:: Jed and Levi began lacrosse practice and games. They also attended their 4H education day.

:: Ezra began attending daycare full time so that I could rest and heal. I napped almost daily and went for a walk outside whenever possible. I also tried to keep up with my calling as our ward’s Young Women’s president, but I mostly delegated to my presidency.

:: I sold our litter of fluffy puppies.

:: I had one last surgery to get rid of the necrotic skin on my right breast and awoke with yet another wound vacuum.

MAY

:: I met up with my grandma, mom, aunts, and cousins for a girls’ weekend in Utah at BYU Women’s Conference.

:: Our ward youth had their second annual Work Hard Play Hard day. I had to sit out for most of it because I was still limited - no lifting, no swimming.

:: The boys attended their 4H sale day and brought home two new dairy heifers. They continued playing lacrosse.

:: Levi went on a field trip to Craters of the Moon.  Levi was recognized twice for his academic achievements at a year end school assembly.

:: Ezra turned three years old!

:: I had a couple more post op appointments, of course.

JUNE

:: I wound up in Doctor Poppler’s office yet another time for some curious red bruising that we decided to just watch.

:: Levi went on an overnight campout with the boys from church.

:: Our family met up with Talon’s family in St George, Utah for a weekend of hiking, biking, and swimming. The boys had so much fun playing with their cousins.

:: I spent a night at stake girls’ camp and enjoyed myself so much that I could hardly speak when I returned because I was so hoarse and sick.

:: We started running a fireworks stand on Five Points in Twin Falls as a family. There were some very long and warm days but the older boys learned so much!

JULY

:: We sold a ton of fireworks over the 4th of July holiday and watched some from the roof of our stand that night.

:: Levi took care of all the neighbors’ animals when they were out of town. The kid is learning how to work hard and be dependable.

:: Jed began mountain biking with his team.

:: I had my last doctor appointment in which I was officially cleared to lift and pursue all the things I love to do! Woohoo!

:: The kids and I spent a day at Roaring Springs with my mom and family.

:: Bron and I spent an amazing week rafting down the Main Fork of the Salmon River! We laughed, we ate, we conquered rapids and jumped off a bridge, we saw a million night time stars, and just plain enjoyed being together.

:: Jed, Levi, and Conrad all visited Commander and Liz in California for a few days. They went to Knott’s Berry Farm, played at the beach, and made lots of special and funny memories with their cousins and family.

:: We joined all of Bron’s brothers in Ririe, Idaho for a Nelson family reunion that included an obstacle course around the farm and a giant blow up water slide for the kids.

AUGUST

:: Levi turned 11 years old!

:: My family photography season officially began.

:: We took the family camping at Cabin Creek near Stanley, Idaho and made some great memories.

:: Sports started in earnest. Levi played football. Jed rode on the mountain bike team. Levi had his first games and Jed had his first race of the season.

:: The boys started school: 8th, 6th, and 1st grades.

SEPTEMBER

:: We spent a week at the Twin Falls County Fair! Jed and Levi showed their dairy heifers.

:: I began potty training Ezra.

:: I was released from my calling as young women’s president. Whew! Don’t worry, I filled all my “extra” time quickly with violin students. The family photography season chugged on. I desperately tried to keep my balance as I juggled all the things. September was intense.

:: I spent my weekends taking Jed and his friends to their mountain bike races across the state. Levi crushed his football games on Saturdays.

:: Jed went on a day long fly fishing trip down the Snake River and is totally hooked on the sport now.

:: Misty had her third (and last) litter of puppies; ten fluffy Aussie Doodles!  Ooops.

:: Bron spent a couple of days in Denver for work.

OCTOBER

:: Football and mountain biking continued until mid month. Then Levi started wrestling at the middle school.

:: I continued to take family pictures.

:: Bron and I got Nitrox certified with our fellow scuba diving friends.

:: We celebrated Halloween! Bron and I dressed up as each other for our annual adults only party. Then Jed hosted a friends party at our home while the rest of the boys went trick-or-treating.

NOVEMBER

:: We discovered Levi had head lice! He probably got them from another kid at wrestling. It took weeks to successfully rid his head of those nasty little bugs.

:: I sold Misty's puppies.  It always feels bittersweet.

:: Conrad turned 7 years old!

:: Bron and I went on another scuba diving trip of a lifetime to Roatan, Honduras. We spent a week eating, diving, diving, eating again, diving some more, eating some more, and sleeping. We saw sharks and baby box fish and iridescent strings of pearls! It was a beautiful, warm, and sunny dream vacation.

:: We celebrated Thanksgiving with the entire Nelson family in Ririe, Idaho. This year, dinner was held at the church where we played games of lightning and pickle ball between eating and chatting.

DECEMBER

:: Ezra qualified for preschool due to his speech (or lack of it). We are still trying to potty train him, by the way.

:: I played my violin for an MCO concert in the Boise area. The best part was that I got to sit and play right next to my mom! I love playing my violin for MCO. It’s fast paced and they always do an excellent job with their concerts.

:: Bron and I enjoyed a fun night out with friends at an annual Christmas party and white elephant gift exchange.

:: We celebrated Bron’s 40th birthday!!! I surprised him with a date to Miracle Hot Springs for massages and a soak in a private pool. Then we met our friends at Texas Roadhouse for dinner.

:: We celebrated Christmas and surprised the boys with a week long cruise to Jamaica, Grand Caymen, and Cozumel in January. Of course we squeezed in some cookie baking, craft making, skiing, and extended family time over the break too.

*****

It's been a wild year with a toddler, a teenager, and two kids in between.  But they are good kids.  Jed and Levi have matured quite a bit.  They stepped up to help out around the house and with their siblings when I could not.  Then they continued the habit.  They are thriving in school and in sports and becoming their own people with their own talents and interests.  I could not be more proud.

Jed is so tall now!  I'm not sure he ever stops eating.  Lucky for me, he still allows me to kiss his cheek before he leaves the house each morning.

Levi is confident and ambitious.  He has the best group of friends at school and has the work ethic of a lumberjack.

Conrad still talks a mile a minute and is our creative child.  There's never enough tape in the house for his projects.  He loves to play outside with friends every chance he gets and can ride a bike like a mountain goat climbs a steep cliff; it just comes naturally.  Conrad is also learning how to read.

Ezra deserves the nickname Gremlin.  He's our growling monster that we are lovingly trying to tame through silly songs (he requests Baby Shark each night before bed) and dance (he loves it when Jed spins him around the living room) and family meals.  Ezra can entertain himself for hours with his favorite toys that wind up all around the house. He's a mama's boy whom loves to climb into my lap for cuddles every chance he can get.

A Mid May Update

5.20.2022

^^For some reason, I was really feeling many of these photos in black and white.  A little nostalgia, maybe?^^

Talking about three recent happenings:

1. The warm weather has finally arrived between the rain storms, which means I am in my happy place as a mama.  I absolutely LOVE taking my boys to go adventure or play outside and during the first week of May we made it to the park four different times. That week, Ezra learned how to climb ladders and careen down the slides like a bullet, laughing the whole time. And Conrad learned how to cross the monkey bars. He is so proud of his new skill. We had to make time after our grocery trip to town just to do them again.  I'm soaking in this phase of motherhood.  They'll both be in school before I know it!  It makes these park trips all the sweeter.

Also of note, this has by far been the coldest, rainiest, and windiest spring we seem to have ever had while living here.  Winter just won't stop coming around!  Fortunately, I *think* yesterday might have been the last of it.

2. Our new ward put together a Work Hard, Play Hard Day on May 7th for the youth.  The young men and women met for lunch and then split up to do various outdoor yard work as a service activity for several hours.  I enjoyed meandering around to different groups of kids to help them work and to chat.  Afterward the work was done, we gathered all the youth to go swimming at Nat Soo Pah.  It was so much fun!  Our friend Owyn won the belly flop contest off the high dive!  Kid committed.  He also said he had no idea how much it would hurt!  Lol.  The young men happened to help a woman who had locked her keys and son in the car.  Then we stuffed our faces with brats and cookies and chips and enjoyed a fireside led by President and Sister Funk.  I think it was a successful activity!

So how is it going as the young women's president, you ask?  Well, I feel like I am finally finding my groove; I have finally won the girls' trust and am getting to know them and their individual needs.  It's been a trip learning how to juggle this calling.  I learned early on that I need to be assertive -- though sometimes I worry that I'm making the wrong decisions?  It's weird to be in charge.  There's a lot I do not want to do, like micromanage.  But it's also nice to be able to make changes or switch things up just because something isn't working or something better comes up!  I realize I will never be able to make everyone happy.  I occasionally get push back from parents who do not want to drive or other mildly lame reasons.  Sorry.  This is what it is.  We have a humungous ward, but it's a healthy ward.  And I will do what I think is best for these girls as I work closely with Bishop England, who has been good to get to know.  He's a go, go, get-it-done kind of a person.  So understanding his personality along with his leadership position has had me adjusting.  But I think I've got it now.

Anyway, I will sing praises about my presidency all day.  Chalet, Lisa, and Genesa have been the best group to work with.  They each communicate well and run with their responsibilities.  I never have to worry if they will come through!  They always do.  It's been so helpful.  I honestly think I did have divine inspiration when selecting them.  I mean, I had no idea who Lisa or Genesa were!  Never met them.  But Genesa is a whiz with all things secretarial.  Wow!

Young Women's president is a time consuming job.  I actually silenced all of my young women group texts because they were so distracting.  Now I get to it when I get to it -- which is a few times a day.

Nothing like a learning curve to give a girl some stress and keep her on her toes!  But I'm excited for what's next in the program this summer and to have some fun with the girls.

3.  The boys have been making us parents absolutely miserable the last few weeks.  They've been lazy and fighting incessantly.  Nothing is ever quite good enough; they want more.  When Levi lamented that he wanted to do something fun, Bron and I just about kicked his tushy.  We explained that everything we have been doing has been for him and his brothers.  Those lacrosse tournaments in Idaho Falls and Jackson?  Those were for you!  The 4H cows (and subsequently the new fence we put in), the mountain biking program... it's all for you!  Bron and I never did celebrate our 15th anniversary properly.  There hasn't been time to do much else.  Then over the weekend, after watching a few hours of TV, Jed and Levi complained that they didn't have time to do anything fun for themselves.  "There's no time to shoot my compound bow!"  And that was the last straw.

No TV for a week.

Monday evening, Jed and Levi were mad.  Levi just sat on the couch next to me, in tears.  He had no idea what to do with himself!  I made a few suggestions, but nothing sounded good to him.

Wednesday night, Jed needed to be at a mountain biking meeting and I needed to be at young women's.  That left Levi to babysit his two little brothers at home.  And do you know what happened without TV as an option?  The boys played outside.  They rode their bikes and drew with chalk.  Then Levi remembered he had chores to do.  So he and Conrad put their folded clothes away, did the dishes, wiped the counters down, and even swept and mopped the floor!  I came home to a clean home and was astounded.  Levi totally deserved to be paid for his efforts.

Thursday night something similar happened again with Jed.  Also, Levi decided to get a puzzle out and put it together.

No TV suddenly turned my boys into responsible agreeable human beings!  It's a parenting win!!!

The 10th Annual Day in the Life Post 2022

5.03.2022

Who knew back in 2009 when I started this 'ol blog that it would become a family journal of sorts that I would still be using today thirteen years later?  This blog means so much to me.  I have many of the years printed into hard covered books.  The other day, Jed and Levi were lamenting that I don't love them as much as I love their little brothers.  I busted out the books and proved to them that they were each my whole world at the same ages as Conrad and Ezra are now.  They lit up with big grins, reading through what I wrote about them and seeing their pictures.  That is why I blog.  Or at least one reason.  My memory gets hazy.  This blog brings me so much joy to see pictures and read passages that bring back precious memories I otherwise would have forgotten.  And so I am determined to keep blogging, keep journaling, keep putting my thoughts and experiences to virtual paper.  It helps me process my feelings and is a safe place to store those things that are most precious to me.

Anyway, enough sentimental blabbering.  Welcome to the 10th annual day in the life post!  I chose Thursday April 21st this year instead of waiting til May.  A cold and rainy day just felt more authentic to document.  This winter has felt long and never ending.  Spring just keeps teases us only to disappear!  I wanted to remind myself of the beauty and the fun that really does exist right under my nose.

Introducing Gus the Labradoodle

4.28.2022

It's offical.  Gus is here to stay!  (We must be nuts! 🤪)  Welcome to the family little guy!

I think my life should be following three specific mantras at this point:

1. Never say Never

2. Expect the Unexpected

3. Embrace the Chaos

Adopting a puppy was not on my radar this month!  In fact, I just spent a copious amount of time and energy getting rid of the nine that we already had.  Having a puppy so soon under our roof again was a surprising turn of events!  But it's a happy turn that I'm hoping will come with a very sweet companionship one day.

Our good friends Dave and Amy just had a litter of Labradoodles. (Auggie is 12% Labrador, the rest Poodle.)  They knew that we eventually want to breed our Australian Shepherd to a Poodle, so they brought him over Sunday afternoon and asked if we wanted him.  It was totally manipulative -- in the best and funniest of ways.  We were overwhelmed and the boys were instantly head-over-heels in love with the puppy.  Our friends knew we couldn't possibly say no.  The decision was obvious: keep him!  The stipulation is that we owe Dave and Amy some strawberry freezer jam + the first couple of stud fees/puppy sales to pay for him.  Done. Deal.  We must be absolutely crazy to take on a third dog!

So far, Auggie seems to be a very chill puppy.  He's playful and curious yet is totally willing to just come lay down next to me.  I can see Gus becoming a beloved part of the family.  Just wish us luck on potty training first!  And then all the other training we will no doubt need to conquer afterwards.

Below are pictures from our first day with Auggie.  (It just happened to be Jed's 12th birthday as well.  He got a bike AND a puppy?!  Lucky duck!)  A fluffy puppy + chalk just might make for the best spring evening ever. 🥰  Also, can I hear three cheers for a day that was finally over 50 degrees and not blowing?!  Whoop!

St. George for Spring Break Part II

3.26.2022

The sun came out to play after our rainy exploration of the ghost town.  So we went out to play too!  We rounded out our second evening at the pickleball courts.  I'd never played before.  But we had a lot of fun!  I can totally see us playing all summer long together.

On the morning of our third day, we headed out to the Warner Valley Dinosaur Track site to see some real life dinosaur prints.  It really does blow my mind that these are REAL tracks.  It was a windy day, but we were protected from the gusts down below where we were, so we took our time hiking around and killing some time in the sunshine.  Afterwards, we explored the 19th century Fort Pearce.

Ezra was so thrilled with himself for making it to the top (with help, of course)!

That afternoon, we struck out at three different restaurants for lunch; they were all closed!  It was the strangest thing.  Then we went swimming at the Washington City Community Center pool.  Conrad's favorite part was the slide that went outside the walls!  It felt extra fast this trip too.  It took Ezra a solid 90 minutes to warm up to the waterpark, but once he did, he was a belly flopping laughing fish!

When we were all dried off, the kids climbed the rock wall and played some air hockey.  Suddenly, Levi's face went white and he said he didn't feel good.  Then he threw up in the gutter right outside the front door of the community center.  If I had to choose one kid to get sick on a vacation, it would definitely be Levi.  He's a tough kid who doesn't want any attention and will push on regardless of how he's feeling!  Levi threw up once more out of the truck window.  But he was game for some sodas and a trip to Pioneer Park.  So that's what we did.  Pioneer Park is one of my favorite places to hike around!  There are so many nooks and crannies hidden amid the red rock.

That night, I didn't feel good either!  I went to bed early and tried my hardest not to throw up.  Lol.  It was a legit bug that stayed with me for a few days.  So Tuesday morning, Bron and I decided to call it a trip and head home a day early.

But first, Bron took Jed and Levi on one final bike ride down Deadringer, Goosebumps, and Kryptonic.  It was a super windy ride!

Then it was off to the park to make one final dream come true for three boys: renting an electric scooter!  Jed, Levi, and Conrad took turns riding laps around the park while I tried to feel better by soaking up the sunshine.

Finally, we ended the trip on a high note with Nielsen's Frozen Custard.  Delicious!

Until next time, St. George!  You're always good to us.

St. George for Spring Break Part I

3.25.2022

When Bron and I arrived home from our trip to Mexico, it become obvious that Jed and Levi were a bit jealous and ready for their own fun and adventure.  So we booked a last minute place to stay in St. George, Utah for a long weekend getaway full of hiking, biking, and swimming.  Honestly, we could have stayed home and done many of the same things and had just as good a time.  Perhaps we will do that some day, but this year, it meant a lot to the big boys to do a little traveling.

Are you ready to read all about our family's vacation ups and downs?  Read on because the hills were high and the valleys low.  Balance, I guess.  I prefer to remember the highlights through pictures though.

We packed up the truck to begin our spring break adventure late Friday afternoon and arrived in Nephi, Utah a little after midnight.  The six of us squeezed into one budget hotel room for the night.  Jed, Levi, and Conrad slept in one queen sized bed while Bron and I attempted to sleep with Ezra in the other.  I didn't bring the pack 'n play because I did not think there would be enough room in the camper trailer we rented.  That was a mistake.  Ezra had napped a few hours in the truck and would not go to sleep!  Sitting up between us, he would gently touch my back and my face.  Then he'd touch Bron.  And then back to me again.  We hardly slept that night.  But I was awoken by five firm long kisses to my lips from Ezra, so that was nice!

Hello 2022

1.07.2022

We welcomed the New Year with so much snow, ice, and wind, that the boys had two extra days off from school to play!  They went to school Monday (the roads were terrible) but then school was canceled Tuesday and Wednesday.  They played hard outside both days doing what boys do best: making precarious sledding choices (i.e. running into a pile of logs or sage brush) and getting soaking wet.  But I prefer that over dealing with their pent up obnoxious energy inside the house.  There was also a lot of Nintendo those two days too.

While they played at the neighbor's house one afternoon, I strapped Ezra into the hiking backpack and we went snowshoeing down in Little Cottonwood Creek.  I was the first to make tracks and thoroughly enjoyed watching the dogs bound through the snow ahead me.  It was so quiet!  Everything was blanketed in a soft thick layer of snow as snowflakes drifted down from the sky.  A true winter wonderland!  I often stopped to just listen to the birds and Ezra's soft breathing behind my ear; he was mesmerized too.

Happy New Year! 2021 Recap

12.31.2021

This happy rollercoaster of a life just seems to be gaining speed.  Our year 2021 was busting at the seams with things to do and places to see.  We made our new house into a home, put in a yard, added some animals, squeezed in some adventures, and tried our best to keep up with four wild and independent boys.

I admit, adding a fourth child has been hard.  There's so much joy in having a baby and I wouldn't for a second wish Ezra away, but meeting one more child's daily needs has stretched my time and overwhelmed my mental load.  I think I honestly forgot how demanding it is to keep a tiny toddler alive and happy!  So I've been doing my best to write everything out in my planner (I became my own mother after all!  Lol.), say 'no' whenever possible, and to remind myself that nothing is usually wrong in any given moment.  It's just me, stressing out.  If I had one wish it would be more time.  Time to dedicate to myself for exercise and creative outlets.  Time to listen intently to each of my boys and to play with them.  We just seem to be jumping from one thing to the next!  School, dinner, sports, bedtime... and before I know it another day has passed us by.

I'm doing my best to just appreciate this phase of life.  I know it will last too long and simultaneously not long enough.  I have everything I ever dreamed of for myself and more!  So I make a conscious effort to notice the good things the boys are doing -- they really are amazing -- and to cherish that hug, that laugh, that "I love you too, Mom".  And then I pray to my Heavenly Father to make up for all that I lack.

As for Covid and the current state of the world, well, I'm expecting to prove my 23rd booster shot for a $55 dollar Hot and Ready Little Ceasar's pizza by the year 2026.

These are the highlights of 2021:

January: We sold our home of nine years and moved into our white farmhouse on five acres.  A dream come true!  Pinch me.  I still cannot believe I get to wake up every morning here.

February: We spent the month unpacking and organizing.  I fed a chubby baby 7-8 times a day.  I just remember spending hours either spoon feeding or breastfeeding Ezra!  Jed and Levi also started practice on swim team twice a week.

March: Bron and I got scuba certified!  We took the whole family to hike and bike in Moab, UT for spring break.

April: We celebrated Easter and Jed's 11th birthday!

May: My baby boy turned one year old!  Bron and I celebrated 14 years of marriage.  Jed and Levi brought home their 4H dairy heifers, Domino and Pepper Jack.  My dad, Liz, and Mia visited for a fun filled weekend.  We did a lot of dirt work on our property and planted two dozen trees and even more plants!

June: Ezra started walking!  Conrad began the summer with swimming lessons.  Jed and Levi boarded their very first airplane alone to spend a weekend in California playing with Commander and family.

July: We enjoyed an epic family hike along the Fishhook Creek Trail.  We also attended our first official Nelson family reunion.  Jed had a fun three days at a golf camp.  And we played hard when my sister Lauren and her three kids came to visit for a week!  Then we gathered in Boise with more family to go through the temple with my little brother Michael and send him off on his LDS mission.

August: Conrad became a fish and took more swimming lessons.  Bron enjoyed a week of high adventure with the young men.  We planted GRASS in the yard!  Football and mountain biking practices began dominating our evenings.  Levi turned 9 and started the 4th grade.  Jed started 6th grade at the MIDDLE SCHOOL and picked up the trumpet in the band.  At first, he sounded like he was blowing his nose when he practiced but fortunately now he can carry a tune!

September: We spent a week as a family at the Twin Falls County Fair.  Jed and Levi washed and showed their cows daily; they even won a few ribbons.  Conrad started preschool five days a week and can now write his name and sing lots of silly songs.  Our church stake split and we were organized into the brand new Rock Creek Ward.  Then I was promptly called to be the young women's president!

October: We went on an overnight family adventure to Redfish Lake where we stayed in a cozy cabin, went for a boat ride, and did a lot of hiking.  I flew to Arizona to conquer the 24 mile rim to rim hike of the Grand Canyon with my sister Lauren and two cousins, Rachel and Necia.  It was a blast!  The boys went trick-or-treating on Halloween.

November: Conrad turned five years old!  We celebrated Thanksgiving at the Nelson dairy and tried not to drown in new church callings and responsibilities.

December: Bron and I escaped on a week long vacation to Cozumel, MX (aka Paradise!) where we went scuba diving and soaked up the warm sunshine.  Then we enjoyed a magical and chaotic Christmas with our four boys.  Finally, we ended the year with some freezing temps and a snow storm!

It's a crazy beautiful life!

Christmas, But Make It Merrier 2021

12.28.2021

We celebrated our first Christmas in our new home!  And it was nothing short of a combination of chaos and magic.  Bron and I weren't sure if Levi still believed in Santa Clause, but when he came out soon after going to bed saying that we forgot to leave cookies and milk for the big guy, we exchanged knowing smiles.  As per tradition, we read the second chapter of Luke and watched It's a Wonderful Life after the kids went to bed.  It's always a favorite.

Bron and I were up before 7AM to turn on the lights and music and *fireplace*.  Then we ushered in three very excited boys plus one who was just happy to be a part of whatever was taking place.

A Day in the Life 2021

5.11.2021

These are my 9th annual (can you believe it?) day-in-the-life photos!  I've been taking photos of one ordinary day in May every year since 2013.  I still cherish those very first photos when Jed was just 3 years old and refer to those past blog posts often because so much changes in just one year!

So welcome to Wednesday May 5, 2021 -- our 14th anniversary!  I chose our anniversary because, why not?  I love my Honey Buns.  But I also chose it because I've been taking the big boys to swim team every Monday and Wednesday since the beginning of February.  It's become a part of our routine.

*****

Jed and Levi's alarm goes off at 6:50AM.  They are the world's best kids at getting themselves up and ready for the school day.  It makes me feel like the world's laziest mom, but hey, I give myself some credit for teaching them this kind of discipline.  Lol.  Levi comes out to the kitchen wrapped in a blanket to grab some breakfast while Jed hops in the shower.  Then they switch.

I roll myself out of bed a few minutes after 7:00AM to come say good morning, make sure they've got their backpacks together, and most importantly, kiss them goodbye.  The bus picks them up promptly at 7:30AM.

I've been trying to get myself into a morning exercise routine.  Some days I don't fit it in til nap time, but on this particular morning, I'm able to fit in 20 minutes of kettlebells.  Kettlebells have been helping to strengthen my back and core.  I feel so much better after swinging some weight around, it's crazy!

It's also our anniversary, so I place a little card I've signed on the kitchen countertop next to some sushi I bought the day before; sushi is one of Bron's favorite food.

Then I help Conrad pour some cereal... from a box that he ripped open like an animal.

I can hear the baby has been fussing through the monitor for several minutes so I go to his room to greet him.

MONDAY

3.10.2021

^^Ezra got through his nasty stomach bug with a lot of warm baths!^^

The stomach bug hit our family.  It took down Ezra first.  He threw up four nights straight!  Poor baby.  I slept (well, more like napped through the night) on a mattress in his room just so I could help him out.  Then Jed came down with the bug on Monday.  I picked him up from school and he slept on the couch for the majority of the afternoon.  Finally, Levi threw up in the car on the way home from swim team.  He said he felt fine... up until the moment he suddenly didn't.  Fortunately, he threw up in a bag.  Good boy!  I was so relieved to find out that I didn't have to clean out the back of my car.  So far, the rest of us have been lucky enough to avoid it.  I'm crossing my fingers it stays that way.  The even better news is that Jed and Levi are bulletproof.  They bounced back quickly and are back in school.

Anyway, Monday was a day where I felt inspired to get out my camera a bunch.  I love how much variety I can get just in a day -- even if it was a very imperfect, slightly derailed and messy day.

Snowshoeing. I Mean, Parenting is the Hardest Thing I've Ever Done.

2.15.2021

Goodness, these photos were taken on a Saturday afternoon following a really rough week.  Parenting is HARD.  It is constant round the clock work.  I feel overwhelmed with people to help and listen to and things to do.  This entire year has felt chaotic and defeating.  Was it worth it to build a new home and add a brother to the family?  Absolutely.  But I feel like I try only to fail.  I pick myself up again just to get knocked down, over and over and over.  I make plans only to have them derailed.  I'm talking about simple things from getting enough sleep to eating better to exercising to getting that one thing ticked off the to do list.  And what about my efforts to teach the boys how to properly clean their own bathroom or turn off the light or behave like thoughtful human beings?  Over and over again I teach.  I hand out consequences.  Sometimes I yell.  Nothing seems to work; I am not seeing any changes or progress.  I am swimming against the current.  Stagnant.  Frustrated.  Miserable.

And then there's this one successful afternoon when everything felt okay!  Getting out with my crew of boys always leaves me feeling happier and lighter.  This afternoon of snowshoeing was just what we needed as a family.  The snow was fresh and beautiful!  The air brisk and cold.  We laughed and played and explored a new trail.  Conrad is such a stud.  It was his first time wearing snowshoes and he rocked it!  Kid is capable of anything.  And it was Ezra's first time riding in the hiking backpack.  He seemed to enjoy his perch and the views.

I love them.
